NLEX motorists get free toll as flooding triggers traffic nightmare

The NLEX heavy traffic is still there, but at least the toll is finally suspended.

Starting September 2, vehicles traveling between Pulilan, Bulacan and San Fernando, Pampanga can use the route toll-free amid heavy flooding in the area.

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), the move is the government’s response to the heavy traffic along portions of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) caused by severe flooding at Tulaoc Bridge in San Simon, Pampanga.

Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez met with NLEX Corporation President Luis Reñon to secure the toll-fee for vehicles traversing Pulilan-San Fernando and San Fernando-Pulilan routes.

“Nakausap ko po sina NLEX President Luis Reñon para matulungan ang ating mga motorista at mga pasahero na labis na naapektuhan nitong matinding traffic, alinsunod sa utos ng ating Pangulo. Nagpapasalamat po tayo dahil agad din po silang tumugon sa ating hiling na magpatupad ng libreng toll hanggang sa maging maayos ang sitwasyon ng trapiko,” Lopez said.

The regular toll for Class 1 vehicles traveling between Pulilan and San Fernando is P113, while Class 2 vehicles are charged P281 and Class 3 vehicles

P338. The toll free offer will be implemented until the situation returns to normal, according to the DOTr.

Thousands of motorists were left stranded for hours on Monday after floodwaters inundated part of the interchange. The severe traffic has since drawn frustration from stranded motorists, with both the government and NLEX facing criticism over the response to the flooding and efforts to clear the bottleneck.
