No work, no pay! Senate saves on salaries of Loren Legarda, Bato Dela Rosa, Marcoleta, Jinggoy

The prolonged absence of Senators Loren Legarda, Jinggoy Estrada, Rodante Marcoleta and Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa is turning into an unexpected budget saver for the Senate, with their unclaimed salaries now adding to the chamber’s operational savings.

Senate President Sherwin “Win” Gatchalian said Thursday that the four senators are currently off the payroll for different reasons.

Legarda’s salary was suspended after she filed for medical leave on Aug. 3, which has now stretched for more than three weeks.

Her leave came amid scrutiny over allegations involving her and her son, Batangas Rep. Leandro Leviste, in connection with a P10.44-billion plunder and graft case that remains under investigation.

Estrada and Marcoleta, meanwhile, voluntarily asked the Senate to withhold their salaries after they were placed under the custody of the Office of the Ombudsman.

Estrada is facing plunder and multiple graft charges over allegations that he received more than P573 million in kickbacks and commissions from anomalous flood-control projects in Bulacan.

Marcoleta faces a separate plunder charge over allegations that he accepted more than P75 million in campaign contributions during his 2025 senatorial bid.

Dela Rosa likewise asked the Senate to stop paying his salary while he remains in hiding following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court.

The former Philippine National Police chief is wanted by the ICC over his alleged role in crimes against humanity linked to the drug war of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Gatchalian said the salaries that would have gone to the four senators would instead form part of the Senate’s operational savings.—Politiko.com.ph
