Migz Zubiri backs social media ban for kids: ‘Parang video game na lang ang kumitil ng buhay’

Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri is pushing for a measure banning children from using social media following the deadly shooting at the Ateneo school in Zamboanga.

Zubiri has called for tougher restrictions on social media access of children, raising concerns over the apparent influence of online content on the youth.

“Ban na dapat ang social media for kids! Parang video game nalang ang kumitil ng buhay 🤬” he said in an Facebook post.

Zubiri said the country’s must catch up to protect children amid the impact of violent content on kids.

“Kapag ang isang bata ay kayang manood, maglaro at makakita ng violence for hours every day, we cannot pretend walang epekto iyon. The times have changed, and our laws must catch up. I support a serious social media ban for children,” he said in a post on X.

The shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University left a Grade 10 student dead after a student opened fire on schoolmates and a teacher. The incident was reportedly livestreamed by the shooter, who later shot himself.

“Asahan po ninyo na patuloy na magsisikap ang Senado na pangalagaan ang kaligtasan, edukasyon at kinabukasan ng kabataang Pilipino,” Zubiri added.
