Game over? Remulla urges Congress to curb shooter games after Zamboanga campus violence

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla suspects that the online game Roblox may have heavily influenced the student behind the deadly shooting at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, Remulla noted the disturbing similarities between the suspect’s actions and the virtual environment.

“We still have to do forensic examination on the gadgets of the shooter. Hindi pa natin alam with certainty but it is with great degree of confidence that he was influenced by the game of Roblox because of the manner which he did it,” the Interior chief told reporters.

He clarified, however, that the danger lies not necessarily in the game itself, but in its unmoderated community features where players interact.

“Roblox in itself is not a dangerous game. It is the chat group that is beside it. Do’n nagkakaroon ng buyuan, do’n nagkakaroon ng radicalization,” he added.

According to Remulla, witnesses reportedly saw the suspect playing the game prior to the incident. However, investigators are still awaiting the final results of the forensic examinations on the suspect’s confiscated gadgets to definitively solidify this angle.

In light of the tragic incident, Remulla renewed his urgent appeal to lawmakers to look into the regulation of violent video games to protect the youth.

“I call upon Congress again to help us control and curb the use of first person shooter games that influence these young minds,” he stated.
