The entire province of Pampanga was placed under a state of calamity on Wednesday, August 12, following severe flooding triggered by the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat.

In a statement, the Pampanga Public Information Office (PIO) said the declaration was formalized through Resolution No. 10524 as floodwaters continued to submerge communities across the province.

Data from the provincial government as of 12 noon showed that the bad weather has affected 860,076 individuals, or 269,775 families, with 7,731 residents displaced and staying in evacuation centers.

A total of 297 barangays spread across 17 local government units in the province have been inundated by floodwaters.

The PIO also reported heavy losses in the agricultural sector, with damages breaching P505 million and directly affecting 3,787 farmers and fisherfolk.

The calamity declaration will allow local authorities to tap emergency reserves to expedite aid for affected residents.

“Sa deklarasyong ito, mas mapapabilis ang paggamit ng calamity funds, relief operations, emergency response at iba pang tulong para sa mga Kapampangan na lubhang naapektuhan,” the PIO stated.—Politiko.com.ph
