Can’t let go! Duterte appoints ex-SSS, DOT exec Pompee La Viña to DA

President Rodrigo Duterte just can’t seem to let go of Jose Gabriel “Pompee” La Viña.

After stints at the Social Security Security System and Department of Tourism, La Viña is back in the government as an Undersecretary of the Department of Agriculture. He replaces Bernadette Romulo Puyat, who has been appointed as Tourism Secretary.

Duterte signed La Viña’s appointment paper on Wednesday (June 6). The document was released to the media Thursday (June 7).

La Viña served as Duterte’s social media director when he ran for president in 2016. He was also a member of the media central and communications group.

A photo posted on Facebook showed he and his cousin, Duterte campaign spokesperson Peter Tiu La Viña, met with former Cambridge Analytica CEO Alexander Nix a year before the presidential elections.

La Viña was appointed to SSS in 2016 as commissioner. However, Duterte opted not to renew his term this year because he allegedly “demanded” a P26-million budget for his social media show and launched a “vilification campaign” against four SSS executives who went against him.

He was also accused of requesting accreditation for seven brokers to handle SSS investments.

Shortly after leaving SSS however, La Viña was appointed to DOT as Undersecretary. His term came to an end with Puyat’s appointment because she asked all Undersecretaries and Assistant Secretaries to tender their courtesy resignations.
